Nomination Application Questions

Additional Information

  • Letters of recommendation are NOT included in this stage of application. One brief faculty assessment is required within a week after the deadline. Talk with this individual about your graduate program and fellowship interest well in advance of your April submission!
  • In completing the application, be concise and focused in your answers. Review the guidance below.
  • The UK-Irish Scholarships committee will interview qualified applicants in late April or early May and select nominees.
  • Selected nominees will solicit letters of recommendation from faculty and work with the fellowships advisor, to complete their application for the final deadline. See specific scholarships for additional details.
  • For the St. Andrews, we often have a second round of recruitment in fall if needed but we ask applicants for other UK/Irish scholarships to note their interest in the St. Andrews, if applicable.
  • Dean Gates is happy to advise students and alumni interested in the Ertegun and Gates-Cambridge. You can reach out to her via email at fellowships@middlebury.edu

Completing the Nomination Application

  • Answer the question with as much specific detail as you can. Do not worry that this is not a comprehensive picture of you as a candidate. This application is intended to help us understand how strong of an applicant you might be for one of these fellowships. Use this as an opportunity to focus on what you want to do and why. Don’t worry if you’re not absolutely sure. Give us your best understanding of yourself and your future directions.

  • Do not quote from UK university program websites. Tell us why this program is important and relevant for your longer term objectives in your own words.

  • Maximum word counts are there as a guide. If you don’t need that much space, don’t use it.

  • Do not worry about the quality of the prose or narrative style. That is something you work on if you are nominated.

  • Do not draw on high school experiences unless important and directly relevant.

  • We do ask for a brief statement of support from a faculty member who has taught you or worked with you in research capacity. You should be discussing your interest in these graduate programs and applying for a nomination with this person already. Tell them they will be asked for a brief assessment (not a formal letter) within a week of the deadline. This request should not come as a surprise to them!

  • Know that you can be an excellent student and an excellent candidate for a top graduate program, yet not be a competitive candidate for one of these scholarships. This does not mean that you should not apply—but it is important to know that academic excellence alone is insufficient for these scholarships.

  • Dean Gates is happy to talk with you before this nomination application is due to discuss your interest and questions about the process.
