The purpose of the liberal arts curriculum is to give every student a detailed knowledge of at least one subject and to correlate it with a broad understanding of the liberal arts.

To achieve the scholarship that this objective implies, students work intensively in one or more departments or programs and complete requirements and electives in fields outside of their specialization.

The Office of the Registrar manages all course registration and scheduling. See the Quick Links below for other offices and services related to courses at Middlebury.

First Semester

In their first semester, all Middlebury College students participate in the first-year seminar program. These small, intensive seminars, consisting only of first-year students, are interdisciplinary and tackle big questions. They also emphasize the importance of critical thinking and effective writing, skills also emphasized in the College’s Writing Program. The instructors of these seminars serve as the academic advisers of new students, ensuring that all students benefit from the seasoned guidance of experienced teachers as they plan their programs of study.

Study Abroad

More than half of all students choose to study off campus at some point during their time at Middlebury, especially during their junior years. The Study Abroad Office works with students to ensure that they are aware of the vast array of study-abroad options, including the well-known Middlebury Schools Abroad.

Programs and Opportunities

A Middlebury education is not just defined by what you learn during your years as an enrolled student. It will shape how you respond to new challenges and opportunities for the rest of your life. And even while you are a student, Middlebury offers a rich range of programs and opportunities to help you determine what you want to do once you graduate from college.
