Welcome to the 2019 Teaching and Writing Retreat!

We invite you to the 32nd annual overnight retreat, sponsored by the Center for Teaching, Learning & Research and the Writing Program, to be held at the Mountain Top Inn and Resort in Chittenden, about 45 minutes south of Middlebury. We will begin at 10 am on Monday, August 19 and end in the early afternoon on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

The annual retreat is an intimate experience that explores teaching and learning cultures here at Middlebury. We ask broad philosophical questions as well as share concrete strategies for course design, assignment construction, and responding to student work. Faculty new and old are warmly invited. We especially welcome those of you teaching a new course, those who have never attended the retreat before, or those of you teaching a first-year seminar or a second level college writing course.

This year’s retreat focus will be From Scholarship to Pedagogy: Our Students, Our Culture, & Our Goals. During this time we will consider how does knowing what students bring into our classrooms – their educational experiences, their backgrounds, their worldviews, their challenges — affect our teaching and how we plan our courses? How do we adapt to our students, and how do our students adapt to us? This year’s retreat will be a step in trying to answer these questions.

A highlight of the retreat is the opportunity to workshop your course syllabi with your peers. We will have two interactive plenaries and offer a range of concurrent sessions. We have revised our schedule to include more free time on the first day so that you can enjoy the lakefront and trails at the resort.

The Mountain Top Inn can accommodate about 30 people overnight for our retreat, and as usual, there should be space for families. You can find information about the Mountain Top Resort, and directions from Middlebury to the resort, here.

More information about this year’s retreat’s schedule and registration will be forthcoming.

Sincerely yours,

Amy Morsman
