First@Midd is a pre-orientation program for first-generation college students that focuses on acquainting students with useful resources and offices at Middlebury, navigating the social and academic transition to Middlebury, and connecting students with community members who may be key to your success. First@Midd student leaders were called Peer Leaders, but in an effort to infer warmth, comfortability, and familiarity in the names, they will be changing. All applicants will be updated at the time of their interview on what the new position names are.

~What do First@Midd Mentors do?

First@Midd Mentors work to create an inclusive, equitable, and fun pre-orientation experience for incoming first-generation students. Mentors will prepare for and lead activities, workshops, and educational and social events for first-year, first-generation students to guide and help them understand the dynamics of college life at Middlebury.

There are two options for Mentors:

(1) Co-Leads will be paired with another co-lead to mentor an assigned group of students (family group). Co-leads will also complete initial and daily preparation of supplies for their family groups, assist as assigned with daily tasks, and drive when necessary.

(2) Logistic Leads (3 mentors) will assist the Director, Assistant Director, and AFC Summer Intern with daily tasks as assigned; rotate on a set schedule as photographers of events and sessions; have driving responsibilities (Middlebury fleet vehicles and 15-passenger vans); and share responsibility of responding promptly to questions and comments in the F@M group chat.

~What do I need to be a First@Midd Mentor?

We are looking for individuals who have familiarity and sensitivity to issues that first-generation students face and understand the importance of equity and inclusion. Qualified applicants will have a sincere desire to work effectively with ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse people.

COVID Disclaimer:
The dates for mandatory training, arrival, and the F@M program are all to be determined. We also do not know if F@M will be fully in-person or a hybrid of in-person and remote. Due to the unknown, we also are unsure as of now if F@M will run as a pre-orientation program, or will happen during regular orientation.

Note: There will be mandatory training in August, either remote or in-person, depending on COVID restrictions.
