Preparation for Tuesday, 21 April

Please read over the Dehejia “Fixing a Shadow” selection just to get a sense of the history  and context for understanding the development of photography in India in the 19th c. Then, Harris’s “Topography” focuses on Felix Beato’s images of the Lucknow Uprising of 1857.  We will talk about some of his images to start with, and then we will switch our attention to the famed Indian photographer Raja Deen Dayal, as well as considering the Indian practice of painted photographs.  We will do an interactive exercise in class.
