I have not felt so at home in such a long time. That statement sums up pretty much my experience. I experienced an awakening of my heart to the person God needed me to see: a brown Filipino boy (or man lol).

KALI – Kapwa Leadership Institute. Three words that might have had no meaning to most of us until that very night where Kuya David shared his heart about our Filipino Heritage. One of the words he described us as was resilient and I never thought to even think about how much we have endured and persevered through as Filipinos. I sat there trying to hold back the tears because I have never been moved about my own ethnicity, my identity. That night God gave me a new name and that was “Filipina.”

This last school year has been a whirlwind of different emotions, thoughts and unexpected turn of events. I was complacent and wanted to stick to what was comfortable and that was youth and worship ministry back home. When I was asked to help serve as the worship leader at Sac State for InterVarsity, I was hesitant.
Kapwa is the Filipino word for shared identity. It evokes senses of a shared history, shared blood, triumphs, struggles, and journey. This institute is a dream of InterVarsity Staff who desire to gather key Filipino Americans who are in college or recently graduated for a time to grow their leadership skills and vision for the campus. Our theme is Lakbay - meaning “journey.” We believe that there are unique contributions Filipino young adults bring in their pursuit of God’s Kingdom. Looking closely at the Apostle Peter’s journey, this institute is an attempt to challenge your thinking, address issues facing your community, and foster your potential as a person, leader, and world-changer.
The conference is scheduled for July 28-31, 2013 at Mercy Retreat Center, just south of San Francisco, CA.
