Connecting to a File Server Using a Mac

1. Connect to the campus network via Ethernet jack or secure wireless.  If you are off-campus, you will have to connect using VPN before continuing.
2. Open the Finder by clicking on the desktop.
3. From the Go menu select Connect to Server. The Connect to Server dialog box will appear.
4. In the Server Address field type the appropriate address:
   • For Middlebury campus storage use smb://middcloud.middlebury.edu/middfiles
   • For Monterey campus storage use smb://middcloud.middlebury.edu/miisfiles
   • Refer to the note below for additional info if you are working with other servers that support large media files or department research.
5. Click the + button to add the address to your Favorite Servers list.
6. Click Connect.
7. You may be asked to provide your login credentials. If so:
   • In the Name field type your full email address (username@middlebury.edu format).
   • In the Password field type your password.
   • Click Connect.
8. A Finder window opens displaying all the folders available on the connected server.  Note the additional location listed at left in the Finder window.
   • Not sure which folder to choose? View information about the content and structure of Middfiles.
   • Monterey staff typically use the Departments folder on Miisfiles.

Note: Typically you only need to connect to Middlebury file servers using one of the addresses above. For some specialized cases (large media files, departmental research, application-specific data that is shared for analysis) we support additional servers. To connect to a different file server you simply modify the steps slightly. In the instructions above, replace middfiles with the name of the desired shared folder. For example, if you wanted to connect to the gis folder on middcloud, you'd need to use the following format:
