Dear Diary, “How can I make $200?”

The Twilight COVID-19 Diary Project seeks Middlebury College students to keep a diary of life during the COVID-19 epidemic, starting immediately, and ending June 30, 2020.

By agreeing to participate, diarists will receive $200 for the intellectual and emotional labor of recording their everyday experiences. At the end of the project, diaries will be deposited in Middlebury College Special Collections & Archives to document their experiences for future scholars, historians, scientists, and storytellers who will make sense of life during this health crises.

Eligible diarists need to identify as members of diverse communities historically excluded from the cultural record, including racial, ethnic, and religious minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ+, low-income, or those with documentable learning or other forms of disabilities.

The Twilight COVID-19 Diary Project is not an academic assignment, it won’t be graded or judged. Diarists need not be writers, scholars, poets, or artists. We want you to write about daily life, from your personal perspective. The emphasis is on honesty, plain-spokenness, and a willingness to be a witness to your experience. Students from all disciplines and all class years are welcome to apply.

Selected diarists can choose to receive a print journal (mailed to a home address by The Vermont Bookshop), or a “Premium” Day One app account for Android and iPhones.

Visit our FAQ page for more information.

We are not accepting more diarists at this time.

Visit the COVID-19 Archive Project to donate diaries, memes, zines, photographs, and anything else to the Archives.
